Microwave Passive Direction Finding unifies direction finding (DF) theory and brings together into a single source wide-ranging information on the technology of measuring the direction-of-arrival of microwave signals. Throughout the material, there is authoritative information useful to preparing a detailed technical proposal for new business that has been compiled from many years of defense industry presentations, reports, and systems development. Diagrams and photographs of state-of-the-art equipment depict the methods discussed, and equations and charts facilitate a "hands-on" approach to calculating system performance.
The book also presents rarely published systems concepts, such as digital preprocessing, supercommutation, and wide RF bandwidth signal detection methods. Specific sections cover evolution and use of monopulse passive DF receiver theory, design of antenna elements for conformal DF coverage, receiver configurations, DF antenna arrays, interferometer DF techniques, computation methods for signal detection, probability of detection, accuracy of DF systems, and signal processing and display methods. More than any book on this technology, Microwave Passive Direction Finding anticipates the questions that arise in the DF design process. The chapters are organized to stand alone, making the book useful as a text/reference for the practicing engineer. At the same time, the material is organized inductively, so that it can be used for a college or seminar text.

From the Publisher
Presents the technology of measurement of direction of arrival of RF signals from thier source. Unifies DF theory and details methods of calculating and predicting actual system performance. Covers DF techniques utilized at microwave frequencies (from 500 MHz to 100 GHz) for aircraft and ships, with particular emphasis on electronic warfare. Explains how signals are identified, the speical receivers and antennas required, as well as some of the cloaking techniques used to deal with hostile signals. Introduces new systems concepts such as digital processing, supercommutation, and wide bandwidth noise detection methods. Provides working charts, diagrams and equations to facilitate configuration of systems. Suitable as an aid in proposal preparation. Using practical examples, computer-generated graphs, block diagrams and illustrations, this book is disigned as a textbook for college courses, seminars and tutorials as well as a reference for the working engineer.
About the Author
Stephen E. Lipsky is the President of Bynetics, an intellectual property consulting firm. His broad experience includes serving as vice president of American Electronics Labs (now BAE Systems), where he was responsible for the profit and technical performance of a $55 million electronics warfare matrix skill center. The ALR-67 and APR-9 radar warning systems were typical of the wide range of receiving and jamming equipments under his responsibility. He was director of advanced systems for General Instrument Corporation, where he helped develop the ALR-66 RWR, the Sub DF system, and the R-1910 receiver. He was president of Polarad Electronics, Radiometrics Division, where he developed the WLA-3, and was the project engineer at Loral Electronics for the development of the ALQ-53 Monopulse DF Receiver.
The holder of thirteen patents, Dr. Lipsky is a Life Fellow of the IEEE and a charter member of the Association of Old Crows where he received a silver medal for his work on direction finding and warning receivers. He holds BEE and ME degrees from New York University, College of Engineering, a Ph.D. from Drexel University and is a graduate of the U.S. Army Signal Officer’s School.
